Best described as cinematic alt-folk, the record fuses elements of folk, classical, jazz, indie, electronic and alternative music, with lyrics adapted from poetry by Scottish writer, Violet Jacob.
First conceived in the spring of 2020, Fragments in Time is a carefully crafted framing of Jacob’s writings, which brim with themes of nature, place, longing, loss, grit, determination and the passing of time.
For both Rhona and Joseph, creating Fragments in Time was a process of stepping outside of musical comfort zones and creating new common ground in this collection of songs and sonic meditations.

Fragments in Time, is a new, collaborative album from Scottish artists Rhona Stevens and Joseph Peach.
Best described as cinematic alt-folk, their first full-length collaborative effort fuses elements of folk, classical, jazz, indie, electronic and alternative music, with lyrics adapted from poetry by Scottish writer, Violet Jacob.
Rhona is a songwriter, singer and guitarist, recently praised by Clash Music Magazine as a creator of "supreme indie-pop”, while Joseph, described by The Scotsman as possessing "enthralling prowess and attunement", is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer best for his work in Scottish folk music.
The record was first conceived in the spring of 2020. Stuck at home in Glasgow, making music was a welcome escape for flatmates Rhona and Joseph. The pair uncovered a shared admiration for Jacob’s poetry. Her work brims with themes of nature, place, longing, loss, grit, determination and the passing of time - all particularly salient in those uncertain pandemic years.
For both Rhona and Joseph, creating Fragments in Time was a process of stepping outside of musical comfort zones and creating new common ground. Over three years, they have been carefully crafting their unique framing of Violet Jacob's timeless and universal lyrics into a collection of songs and sonic meditations.
The album was recorded entirely at home, at Rhona and Joseph’s Glasgow flat. To bring their vision to life, the pair enlisted the help of an extraordinary cast of collaborators, including: String quartet - Laura Wilkie, Chloe Bryce, Eilidh Randall and Alice Allen, Percussion - Mattie Foulds, Saxophone - Matt Carmichael, Bass - Charlotte Printer and Backing Vocals - Annie Grace. The album’s artwork was created by Orla Stevens.
Alongside these contributions, the album interweaves sampled sounds, much of which holds personal meaning for Rhona and Joe. There are samples from Spanish Albergues and Cafes gathered when they walked the Camino de Santiago, samples of Joseph’s great grandmother from the School of Scottish Studies Archive, telling stories about life, death, superstition in her native Gaelic.
Creative Scotland through the National Lottery, The Marchus Trust, Hope Scott Trust and Fenton Arts Trust saw the value in the project and supported its conception, completion and release - support for which Rhona and Joe are enormously grateful.

Rhona Stevens is a songwriter, singer and guitarist, recently praised by Clash Music Magazine as a creator of "supreme indie-pop”. A recent entry on to Scotland’s Alt/Indie scene, she has appeared fronting her five piece band at festivals including: Doune The Rabbit Hole, Celtic Connections, and Endless Summer. Her recorded music has garnered critical acclaim, including ‘track of the week’ on BBC Radio Scotland’s Janice Forsyth show.
Joseph Peach is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, described by The Scotsman as possessing "enthralling prowess and attunement". Best known for his work in Scottish Folk Music, he is a member of the bands Charlie Grey and Joseph Peach, Westward the Light and Tannara. He has toured the world with these acts and others, with notable performances including Cambridge Folk Festival, La Festival Interceltique De Lorient, Celtic Colours Festival, Celtic Connections Festival and Australia’s National Celtic Festival. He holds numerous recording credits as instrumentalist, producer and recording engineer.

The pair uncovered a shared admiration for Jacob’s poetry. Her work brims with themes of nature, place, longing, loss, grit, determination and the passing of time - all particularly salient in those uncertain pandemic years.
Violet Jacob (1 September 1863 – 9 September 1946) was a Scottish writer known especially for her poetry, mainly in Scots. She was described by a fellow Scottish poet Hugh MacDiarmid as "the most considerable of contemporary vernacular poets".
For both Rhona and Joseph, creating Fragments in Time was a process of stepping outside of musical comfort zones and creating new common ground. Over three years, they have been carefully crafting their unique framing of Violet Jacob's timeless and universal lyrics into a collection of songs and sonic meditations.
The album consists of thirteen tracks - seven songs and six instrumental interludes. The music, co-written by Rhona and Joseph combines a heavy emphasis on keys - piano, fender rhodes, harmonium and synths, with strings, sax, percussion and bass.
The album interweaves sampled sounds, much of which holds personal meaning for Rhona and Joe. There are samples from Spanish Albergues and Cafes gathered when they walked the Camino de Santiago, samples of Joseph’s great grandmother from the school of scottish studies archive, telling stories about life, death, superstition in her native Gaelic.
The album was recorded entirely at home, at Rhona and Joseph’s Glasgow flat, with Joe engineering the album. To bring their vision to life, the pair enlisted the help of an extraordinary cast of collaborators.

Eilidh Randall
Alice Allen (Gaia Duo)As well as contributions from:

This record wouldn’t have been possible without some very special folk:
Our wonderful and extremely long suffering flatmate, Ruth Green, who has now spent a couple of years living in this music alongside us; Juno the cat, our feline flatmate and the true star of the show; our brilliant guest musicians, who’s contributions brought our ideas to life in such a gorgeous way; Mattie Foulds, who’s skill, guidance and understanding brought it all to life in the mix; Orla Stevens, for the beautiful artwork; Callum Cronin for his invaluable help in getting the strings recorded, Sherbrooke Mosspark Parish Church for the stunning location for that string session; Mick West and Sgoil Chiùil na Gàidhealtachd, who sowed the seeds of Violet Jacob’s poetry, and bringing us together in the first place; Bollinger and Up Front Brewing, who make the most delicious fuel for late night recording sessions; and our funders: Creative Scotland, The Marchus Trust, Hope Scott Trust and Fenton Arts Trust for making this project possible.
This music wouldn’t exist without the writing of Violet Jacob. Her verse, timeless and universal, remains a source of huge joy and inspiration. -
